| Twenty-five years ago Kay Turnbaugh and
Chuck Webb started the Neder-Nederland. Kay says she started it
because she thought it would be good for all the different people
in the area to have something fun to do that does not require
a lot of equipment or experience. There was a lot to do and the
race would not have happened without Kay and the other volunteers.
The early years proceeds went to the Town of Nederland to run
a great kid’s summer recreation program with the University
of Colorado.
When Pat Willits was director, the night before the race his
mother ironed and folded the T-shirts for the next day. Pat rode
in the back of a red convertible to announce the race. Nature’s
Own was always a big supporter providing the unique geode trophies.
Through the years many businesses have contributed. Race director
Rob Linde kept it going after Kay and Pat. It was hard to find
a director after that. After running the race one year, Judy Moir
wrote the Nederland Chamber of Commerce to say how it could be
better, Deb Goldberg responded with “It sounds like you
know what should be done, would you like to do it?” Judy
directed the race and measured the course with Benji Durden, who
broke his collarbone while riding a bike and measuring. Judy connected
up with Peter Richards who brought accurate timing to the race
along with the association with the BC3 (The Boulder County 3)
the Sunrise Stampede, The Lyons River Run and the Ned-Ned. Now
there are four races with the inclusion of Joe Colton’s
Off Road Adventure Run.
Through the years the weather has played all its tricks: snow,
wind, rain, heat and cold. Usually it’s a beautiful blue-sky
day among the changing aspen. You never know.
There have been a lot of runners through the years, young and
old, teams and costumes. The Ober-Nederland group run to the turn
around point but keep on going, all the way up to Caribou and
back to town. Makes the fun run sound fun. |

Beneficiaries |
The event is organized by the Nederland
Area Chamber of Commerce and proceeds from this year’s event
will be donated to a non-profit which is dedicated to sustainability
and support the economic sustainability of the Nederland area.
Below are the ways that this year’s profits will be used.

1. “It’s Easy Being Green” theme supports environmental
education and sustainable practices. Money will be raised for
the Nederland Sustainability Project, a local non-profit that
facilitates community garden, projects aimed to empower and educate
mountain communities in sustainable food practices.
2. The chamber also uses proceeds to promote and support the
economic sustainability of the Nederland area. Examples of the
Chamber’s work are:
- The Chamber currently hosts the Neder-Nederland, Frozen
Dead Guy Days, and the High
Peaks Art Fair. As in many communities the Chamber serves
as a link between the businesses, citizens and government. All
work together to preserve the quality of life and natural world
we reside in.
The
Visitors Center in Nederland serves
to provide information to visitors and residents alike. The
tourism economy has a big impact on the area providing revenues
and use of our infrastructure and public lands. Through contact
with visitors we hope to increase their appreciation for the
fragile nature of our wildlands and encourage them to leave
no trace.
- The chamber hosts a website that provides information on the
area’s businesses, recreational opportunities and history.
Every day members of the chamber are supporting the schools,
interest groups and non-profit organizations in the area. Working
together we have achieved success in varied endeavors.
The Chamber membership hopes you enjoy participating in this
year’s Neder-Nederland. |

Volunteers |
Come help a wonderful event happen!
First, it is crucial to note that the Neder-Nederland could not
happen without great volunteers. Thank you to all the volunteers
of past races!
Volunteering for the Neder-Nederland is an opportunity to show
community support as a community member or business owner. Every
year volunteers are needed for:
- race setup
- volunteer coordination
- race rabbits
- race marshals
- water stations
- finish line help
- post race festivities
- award ceremony
Please contact Teal Meiling at 303.956.2891 or email nedernederland@gmail.com
if you or your business is interested in volunteering. |
Sponsorship and Marketing Opportunities |
The Neder-Nederland offers different
levels of sponsorship and other marketing opportunities including
booth space, banners, Welcome Runners signs, volunteering,
and advertisement space on race bibs, registration bags, and after-race
postcards. There are many ways to be involved as a business or
non-profit. We are looking to develop partnerships with businesses
that share our values of a healthy lifestyle, community, and environment.
For more information please contact Teal Meiling at 303.956.2891
or email nedernederland@gmail.com.

Greening the Neder-Nederland |
The Neder-Nederland is a low environmental
impact event.
This is what we will be doing this year:
- We will offer composting and recycling in an effort to move
toward zero waste.
- We encourage all participants to take the the RTD to Nederland.
The bus can be from the Boulder station at 14th and Canyon can
be taken directly to the Nederland High School. For the schedule
please check the RTD
website. We also offer shuttle services from the finish
to the start at the High School.
- "ItÂs Easy Being Green" theme supports environmental education
and sustainable practices.
- Money will be raised for the Nederland Sustainability Project,
a local non-profit that facilitates community garden, projects
aimed to empower and educate mountain communities in sustainable
food practices.
- We try to work with local businesses whenever possible.
- We will be collecting lightly used running shoes for One
World Running, a non-profit sending shoes to sub-Saharan
Aftrica, Haiti and Central America. Older running shoes will
be collected for recycling through Eco-Cycle’s
Reuse-a-Shoe program to make running tracks and playgrounds.
|
One World Running Shoe Donation |
BRING YOUR OLD OR NEW RUNNING SHOES FOR DONATION! We are proud
to support this effort. You can bring your used running shoes
to our race and we will bring them to Fleet
Feet, a drop-off site.
One World Running (Shoes for Africa) is a Colorado non-profit
organization with federal 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. They send
shoes to sub-Saharan Africa, Haiti and Central America. The majority
of shoes come from individuals, from running clubs, and Girl Scout
troops that put on shoe drives. Some of the shoes are new; many
are “near-new,” which are the ones sent overseas.
The shoes that are used and not suitable for shipment are sent
to Nike in Beaverton, OR, through Boulder’s Eco-Cycle program.
There they will be ground up and made into running tracks and
playgrounds through the Reuse-a-Shoe program. For more information,
